John Richards Lapenotiere and
the HM Schooner Pickle

by Peter Hore

Lieutenant John Lapenotiere enjoyed his fifteen minutes of fame when Admiral Collingwood gave him a copy of the report of the battle of Trafalgar and ordered him to sail for England.
That earned him a commander's commission but otherwise his career was like that of thousands of sea officers of the period: uneventful.

The Pickle schooner was the second smallest British ship present at the battle. She took no part in the fighting but rescued 160 French sailors, including the famous Jeanette, a young French woman rescued from the Achille when she blew up.
