AQUILON (32) Built in 1786, Thames.
Broken up in 1815.

  • 1788 Capt. CURZON, Mediterranean.
  • 1789-1790 Capt. Robert MONTAGUE, Mediterranean.
  • 1793 Capt. Hon Robert STOPFORD. AQUILON was with Lord HOWE on the Glorious First of June 1794 when she was employed repeating signals.
  • 1794 Capt. R. BARLOW, 07/1794.
  • 1795 Capt. W. E. CRACRAFT, 09/1795.
  • 1798 Capt. T. BOYS, 09/1798, Jamaica.
  • 1803 in ordinary at Portsmouth.
  • 1811 Capt. William BOWLES, Channel, North Sea and Baltic.
During the summer of 1812 seven large English merchant ships, laden with hemp, ran ashore near Stralsund during a thick fog. Boats from AQUILON and SHELDRAKE went in but found that it was impossible to bring them off since 1,500 French soldiers on the cliffs above could fire right down on the decks of the merchantmen. They managed to scuttle each ship on the sheltered side before setting her on fire.
  • AQUILON sailed for the South American station in 1813 and, until March 1814 was employed protecting British trade off the River Plate and, on being relieved, Capt. BOWLES received a letter from the British merchants in Buenos Aires thanking him for his constant attention to British interests. When they returned to Rio de Janeiro Capt. BOWLES and his crew were transferred to the SEINE, the French frigate CERES captured by NIGER and TAGUS off Cape Verde on 6 January 1814, and returned to England in June 1814.
  • In the autumn of 1814 Capt. Thomas BURTON arrived in Portsmouth with the newly launched NELSON, still under jury masts, and found a commission dated 15 August appointing him to AQUILON. He sailed at once for Gibraltar with a convoy of merchantmen and carrying as passengers General Don and his suite. The remainder of the war was spent off the coast of Portugal.
After Napoleon's escape from Elba AQUILON accompanied PHOENIX, GARLAND and REYNARD to the Greek Archipelago in a futile search for the French frigate JUNON and the VICTORIEUSE corvette.
