ASSISTANCE (50) Built in 1725, Woolwich, using the timbers from the previous ship of 1712.
Used as breakwater in 1746.

  • 1743 Capt. Smith CALLIS, who was promoted for destroying 5 Spanish galleys at St. Tropez with his fire-ship DUKE.
ASSISTANCE took part in Capt. KNOWLES' attack on the Spanish settlement of La Guayra in February. She was badly damaged, being hit 41 times and having 12 killed and 71 wounded out of a complement of 250. The whole squadron had to go to Curacao to refit.
  • In April KNOWLES attacked another settlement at Puerto Cabello. All went well until his troops were fired on and retreated to their ships in confusion. It was then decided to attack from seaward and ASSISTANCE was ordered, with others, to bombard the main works. Again the ships were badly damaged by the return fire and had to be withdrawn.
