BITER (12) Gunboat No. 10 Built in 1797, Rotherhithe.
Sold in 1802.

  • 1799 Lieut. J. D. DE VITRE, North Sea.
  • 1800 Lieut. Samuel NORMAN.
On 6 July 1800 BITER and BOXER joined DART (30), four fire ships and some armed cutters in an attack on French frigates lying at Dunkirk. While DART was cutting out the DESIREE (40), BITER and the cutters held off French gunboats. Although the captains of the fireships remained on board until their vessels were completely in flames, the three remaining frigates managed to cut cables and escape behind the Braak sand.
Lieut. NORMAN was wounded during this action. Medals were issued to the survivors in 1849.
  • BITER was paid off and sold at the Peace of Amiens in the autumn of 1802.
