The Black Joke was an old tune later known as The Sprig of Shillelagh. "Sublime was the warning which Liberty spoke" Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852). - 1797 According to one report, BLACK JOKE showed herself at the back of Yarmouth Sands, with the signal flying for an enemy, early in the morning of 9 October; to bring the news that Admiral de Winter had quit the Texel on the 7th. with the Dutch fleet. Others say it was the ACTIVE cutter.
