  • 1782 Capt. James BURNEY. Convoy to the East Indies.
    On the 19 April 1783, shortly after BRISTOL arrived in the Madras Roads, the First Lieutenant, Nicholas TOMLINSON, was ordered to to go with the ship's boats to assist in extinguishing a fire which had broken out on board the East India Co. ship, DUKE OF ATHOL. While he was doing this the DUKE OF ATHOL blew up killing nearly 200 men, including 19 from BRISTOL. TOMLINSON received "a severe contusion in his breast and left side, and his whole body a dreadful shock".
