CONTEST (12) Gun-brig Built in 1804, Chester.
Lost in 1809.

  • 1805 Lieut. John GREGORY, Channel Fleet.
In the spring of 1806 Capt. Lord COCHRANE determined to destroy the French signal posts which were pinpointing the position of British cruisers off the Ile de Re in the Pertuis Breton. Five posts were destroyed at Pointe de la Roche, Cahola and L'Anse de Repos then, on 9 May, CONTEST and the FRISK cutter flanked the battery on Point d'Equillon while seamen and marines from PALLAS attacked it by land from the rear. It was taken at once, the garrison of 50 men escaping save for one man who was taken prisoner. They left behind three 36-pounders. These were spiked, their carriages burnt and the barracks and magazine blown up. All the shells were then thrown into the sea. The signal post at L'Equillon was also burnt.
  • 1809 Ditto, Halifax.
