COSSACK (22) Built in 1806, South Shields.
Broken up in 1816.

  • 1807 Capt. DIGBY, North Sea.
  • 1808 Coast of Spain.
In June COSSACK and COMET went to Santander to assist Spanish loyalists and bring off any British subjects.
He had heard that a French frigate with several gunboats was in the vicinity.
Strong easterly winds alternating with long calms delayed their arrival until the 21st. when the port captain, Don Vincento Camino, told them that the French were soon expected to attack the town through a pass in the mountains. In the afternoon a brig came out of the harbour full of refugees so Capt. DIGBY immediately got under weigh and sent Capt. DALY of COMET into the harbour to obtain intelligence. He found that the French had already broken through and were only a few miles from the port. He also spiked the guns in two forts near the town.
Because the night was dark and stormy, Capt. DIGBY waited until morning before taking further action.
At daylight two boats from each ship under the orders of Capt. DALY, with Lieut. H. M. HERBERT of COSSACK and Lieut. READ of the Royal Marines, left the ships and spiked the guns of Fort St. Salvador de Ano and Fort Sedra. The magazine was blown up and and part of Fort Sedra. The boats had just got round the point of De Ano when a considerable body of French dragoons appeared on the hill beside the smoking ruins of the magazine. Capt. DALY and Lieut. READ were both badly scorched in setting fire to the trains.
  • 1811 Capt. GARTH, coast of Spain.
  • 1812 Capt. William KING, Mediterranean.
  • 1814 Capt. Francis STANFELL, Mediterranean.
