CUMBERLAND (66) 3rd rate Built in 1739, Woolwich.
Foundered in 1760.

  • The rebuild of CUMBERLAND was completed on 10 July and she was launched the next day. The hawser broke during the launch and they had to send to Deptford to borrow their launching gear.
  • 1739 Capt. James STEWART, Woolwich. She was rigged and then sailed to Longreach on 2nd November and ten days later reported that there was a danger of her breaking up because of ice.
  • On 7th. May Sir Challoner OGLE arrived in New York with a fleet of 35 sail under his convoy, in 36 days from Jamaica. The ships with him were the RIPPON, Capt. RENTON; ASSISTANCE, Capt. CALLIS; EXPERIMENT, Capt. COLBY, and the DRAKE sloop. Capt. CLARK, all bound home, except eight sail for the northward, and the DRAKE who only came with them as far as Crooked Island, in order to carry back the pilots. The fleet were several days coming though the Windward Passage, in which time the Men of War took several of the enemy's small craft along the shore. They also met his majesty's the STAFFORD, Capt. LEGG, in company with two French Letter of Marque ships taken by him, and a Capt. Brown, in a New York sloop, who had been taken by them, and retaken by STAFFORD, and was proceeding with them down to Jamaica.
