RAPID (12) Gun-brig Built in 1804, Topsham.
Sunk in 1808.

    Coast of Portugal.
    On 23 April 1808 RAPID and GRASSHOPPER chased two Spanish merchantmen from South America into the shoals off Faro.
    In spite of heavy fire from their escorting gunboats and a shore battery the two brigs managed to capture the Spanish vessels and two of the gunboats.
    The other gunboats were driven ashore.
    The merchantmen were found to be each carrying a cargo worth 30,000 pounds when taken into Gibraltar on the 28th.
    RAPID was badly damaged in the action and had three men wounded.
    Mr BAXTON, the acting master, was particularly commended for his conduct.

  • On 18 May 1808 RAPID was sunk by batteries in the River Tagus while attempting to cut out two valuable merchantmen.
