Wrecked in 1694.

  • Capt. John WARD (1), he was promoted to post-captain on 4 August 1693 in CAMBRIDGE, which had just had a thorough refit, out of the HARP ketch.
The following year, accompanying Sir Francis WHELER to the Mediterranean, he lost his ship in the hurricane which struck the squadron off Gibraltar on 19 February and proved fatal to the rear admiral in SUSSEX, from which only two were saved. CAMBRIDGE lost about 100 out of some 440 on board.
