CAMELEON (14) Brig-sloop Built in 1777, Rotherhithe.
Foundered in 1780.

  • 1781 Capt. DRURY.
At nine o'clock in the morning on the 14th. August, came up with a large Dutch dogger man of war with 18 guns and 20 swivels. A close action ensued, which lasted for half an hour, when the dogger suddenly blew up. The shock was so violent that it threw the people in the CAMELEON off their feet, and when the smoke cleared away, her topsails were seen to be on fire, which were instantly cut from the yards to save the ship. Many of the limbs and mangled bodies of the Dutchmen were thrown in on her decks and rigging; Capt. DRURY sent his boats to search for any of the crew which might have escaped, but not a soul was found. CAMELEON had twelve men wounded, her sails and rigging were cut to pieces.
