  • 1747 Cdr. Richard GWYN, at the beginning of the year he commanded FALCON, which was attached to the fleet under Vice Adm. ANSON which defeated the French squadron commanded by M. de Jonquiere. He was ordered to follow the enemy convoy during the action and make signals to lead ships that might be sent in pursuit of fugitives. Hw was fortunate to capture the DARTMOUTH, a valuable East India ship taken by the French some time before, when retaken she was loaded with stores for the French East Indian settlements.
