In his publication /The Friend/, Samuel Taylor Coleridge offered a sketch of the life of Sir Alexander Ball, the naval officer who served in Malta. Does anyone know of any sources--articles or books--that evaluate this short biography? _________________ Emily B. |

Sorry if it looks presemptuous but I recommend a good article on this very website: A great coxcomb, Sir Alexander Ball by Patrick Marioné http://www.ageofnelson.org/Article03.html.
Just for the anecdote I had to go 3 times at San Elmo to take the pics of Ball's tomb:
- during the week it's the Academy of Police of Malta so no access;
- during the WE part of it is open but no access to the tomb of Ball and Abercomby;
- finally a kind warden took the time to find the right keys and I was allowed to take my pics.
Another interest of the castel is that you can still see the place that was used as the prison in Midnight Express (Turkish government didn't allow the movie to be filmed in Turkey - don't know why?)

It was first published in 2002 in the Trafalgar Chronicle of the 1805 Club.
I think chapters and verses are in the pdf.
