SNR (Society for Nautical Research) which inter alia publish the Marinor's Mirror has a website at http://www.snr.org.uk/.
The "members' area" has an interesting forum, a (very poor) library of downloadable documents and a (very interesting) database of all the articles published since 1911. A search for "Nelson" gives 114 entries.
In 2002 a CD Rom completed by John P Bethell, David Clement and Robert Gardiner, of all articles up to 2000 was published (alas not in full text format), but is now out of print.
One can hope that in the future all the articles in full text will be included but the index online is already very useful.
To register for the "members' area", all you need is your membership number (at the back of your membership card).

The SNR also has a South Division, SNR(South), which can be found on the SNR website. They are learned group of historians who meet at the Royal Naval Club & Royal Albert Yacht Club. Southsea, Portsmouth, England.
The RNC&RAYC also has an excellent library with a complete set of the Naval Chronicles.
The normally meet on a Saturday have luncheon in the splendid dining hall, and then they have a guest speaker and discussion.
The set of CDs is excellent it is a shame that they have gone out of print, I was hoping there might be a reprint, up to the present date.
It must be remembered that the SNR were the group that started the Save the Victory Fund in 1922, and saved HMS Victory from being scrapped.
It is said that the previous time that Victory was due to be scrapped, but was saved, was some years later after Trafalgar, Hardy now a senior officer; told his wife Victory was going to be scrapped. She said no it is not! Like a dutiful husband he did as he was told to stop being nagged.
The page is missing in the records that gave authority to scrap Victory. |
