From the Gentleman Magazine, November 1832:
Having been through a lot of obits, I am amazed at how common was this kind of accident. Candles and open fires were real hazards in those times of long dresses and whigs.
Another common cause of death were traffic accidents: horses and horse cars were not safer than our gaz cars.
Drowning was also very common. Boats were far more used at the time when there were far less bidges and swimming lessons was apparently not common.
