From Janet Macdonald (Author of Feedind Nelson' Navy).
Quote: | I thought, in case the news has not reached you[all], that I ought to let you know of recent developments at The [British] National Archive.
In recent weeks, they have increased the delivery times on documents to what they claim is an average of 45 minutes, but which several readers state to be frequently more like 60 minutes.
As a regular attender of the NA Readers Forum, I attended a special meeting held yesterday, in which the NA management, whilst stating that they appreciate readers' concerns, are not offering to ensure that waiting times are brought back to the average 30 minutes which we have been accustomed to.
Whilst they admit that part of their problem is due to reduced manning, they also say that they have increased concern on the effect which short delivery times are having on the condition of documents.(!)
They did say that they will look into ways in which this can be alleviated, including my suggestion that whilst the increase in the number of documents
which can be advanced ordered (from 3 to 6) is useful, much of the waiting time problem could be solved by increasing the number of documents which
can be ordered when actually at TNA. Those who have to use ADM 12 will be aware of the amount of time wasted while one waits for the next 'piece' in
this sequence to arrive. |
It will be of interest to anyone who intends to visit the Archive at Kew. |
