Photographs of Trafalgar's veterans are very scarse. Photographs of ratings are even scarser.
Thanks to Ian Stacey, his (four times great) grandson, here is the fascinating photo of Hugh Jones who for many years ran the semaphore station at Great Ormes Head in Anglesey for the sailing ships going in to Liverpool. He lived at Beaumaris on Puffin Island, off Anglesey.
On the back of the photo one can read Hugh Jones, born Spt 18 1783, died February 4th 1864 - this likeness taken October 1854 - coppied (sic) May 1868.
Also written in pencil at the bottom: Gra(n)dpa Pickle Herring. Apparently he was known as Grandpa Pickle Herring because of his fondness for that delicacy.
The photo passed down through the family, and the word-of-mouth tradition had that he fought at Trafalgar.
According to the Ayshford Trafalgar Roll, there were three Hugh Jones present at the battle, including two Welsh:a landsman on the Revenge and an AB on the Defiance. On the muster books of the Defiance gives him aged 21 in 1803 (i.e 23 in 1805) which is close to his birthdate (the other Welsh Hugh Jones was only 18 ).
So this Hugh Jones was born in Holywell, Flintshire.
He joined the Defiance as an AB on 6 July 1803 from the Ganges.
He was on board at the battle and awarded £1.17.8 of prize money.
He apparently didn't claim his NGS medal in 1847.
Thank you, Ian.
