Today is the 213th anniversary of the victory off Ushant, of the British fleet under Lord Howe against the French fleet commanded by Villaret-Joyeuse.
Aboard the Tremendous, Mrs Daniel Mackenzie gave birth to a boy, Daniel "Tremendous" Mackenzie, who was later awarded the Naval General Service Medal for being present during the action (with a rating of "baby").
The thunder of the great guns was said to help child's delivery.
Thence the expression: "a real son of a gun". |
