  • On the evening of 1 September 1814 AVON fell in with the American corvette WASP, Capt. BLAKELY, off L'Orient.
    After an action lasting only half an hour AVON's masts had been shot away and she was ungovernable. As she was about to surrender CASTILLIAN (18) David BRAIMER came up and drove off WASP. AVON sank at 1 AM on the 2nd. having lost 10 men killed (including the 1st. Lieut.) and 29 wounded out of 104 men and 13 boys.
