CRUIZER (14) Sloop Built in 1732, Deptford.
Sold in 1744.

  • 1738 Capt. Thomas COTES, arrived at Spithead 20 June 1738.
    She was to be surveyed and supplied with new shrouds and rigging.
    She arrived at Spithead again on 15 August and went into Portsmouth harbour on the 17th. Ad. Philip CAVENDISH had requested an immediate refit as she has been ordered into service in the Channel so she went into South Dock after the SPY sloop came out on the 22nd. CRUIZER was found to be in good condition and she was undocked on the 24th.
    On the 27th. Commissioner Richard Hughes and the Portsmouth Officers searched CRUIZER for iron which had been mentioned in an anonymous letter sent to Sir Jacob Acworth, the Surveyor of the Navy, as being stolen from the RUPERT. Another letter from a blacksmith at Learne near Carikfergus named Hugh Offey (or Offley) stated that he had received iron from Daniel STACEY, the carpenter of CRUIZER, unaware that it had been embezzled. Nothing was found on board.
    CRUIZER went out to Spithead on 20 September and she and SPY sailed on 4 November. It was recorded that Capt. COTES had delivered his muster books on 10 November at Dublin, he also reported replacing fore-topsail yard.
  • On 30 March 1739 accounts for the repair of the sloop at the Ways at Larne was received in Plymouth. She arrived in Plymouth from Ireland on the 28 March 1739 and on 4 April she sailed for Portsmouth to refit for Channel service. On the 3rd. the CRUIZER's cook, William HAILSTONE, had requested an exchange with Robert CARR, cook of the WORCESTER. cruiser was docked on 11 April, her bottom received necessary repairs and she was undocked on the 27th. She sailed for Spithead on the 9th.
  • On 10 August CRUIZER arrived from Bristol with impressed men and was cleaned and tallowed before being sent to Ireland. She and the SPY sailed on 16 November.
  • 1740 Capt. Francis WAKEMAN. On 7 September 1740 John CRISPO was entered as gunner. 1741 Capt. WIMBLETON, Portsmouth. In July he requested a pilot to cruise between Calais and Havre de Grace. September ordered to the Virginia station.
  • In May 1744 the surgeon, William BURT, requested to be transferred to another ship, and in June William BRUCE, having been discharged as a Master's Mate from CRUIZER, requested to be rated as Master.
