FORTE (44) Taken by Capt. Edward COOKE in SYBILLE on 28 February 1799 in the Bay of Bengal.
Wrecked in 1801.

  • Capt. COOKE received intelligence at Madras that FORTE was cruising in the Bay of Bengal and he had the good fortune to meet her in Balasore Roads about midnight on 18 February.
    Although of much inferior force he brought her to close action and forced her to surrender in under two hours.
    Capt. COOKE was mortally wounded and died in Calcutta on 23 May.
  • Ad. RAINIER promoted SYBILLE's first lieutenant, Lucius Ferdinand HARDYMAN, to command FORTE.
    His post commission was dated 27 January 1800.
    FORTE was wrecked off Jeddah in the Red Sea in June 1801, all the crew were saved.
