  • 1851 Arthur P. WILMOT, 11/1850, coast of Africa.
On 25 November 1851 her boats, WILMOT in the gig and Lieut. Charles Fenton BOUGHY in the pinnace, took the British consul from Fernando Po, Mr BEECROFT, into Lagos when an attempt was made to oust the king who was supporting the slave trade.
The other vessels involved were VOLCANO, NIGER, WATERWITCH and PHILOMEL whose captain, Thomas FORBES, was the senior officer.
In spite of the flag of truce the boats were fired on as they crossed the bar and when the landing was eventually made they found themselves opposed by some 5,000 natives.
FORBES could do little more than fire a few houses before retiring with two killed and a large number wounded.
HARLEQUIN was left off LAGOS while a second expedition was organised.
This, on 26 December, was successful.
