HYAENA (24) Built in 1778, Liverpool.
Sold in 1802.

  • 1778 Capt William THOMPSON. She was present for part of the action between Vice Ad. BYRON and the superior fleet of Count D'Estaing off Grenada on 6 July 1779.
    In 1780 she sailed with Ad. George RODNEY's squadron of 21 sail of the line and nine frigates for the relief of Gibraltar.
    On 1 January the squadron captured six Spanish men of war and 15 sail of a convoy from Caracas. She was present at the battle off St. Vincent between Ad. RODNEY and a Spanish fleet on 16 January.
  • 1793 Capt. William HARGOOD. She was taken by the French CONCORD (40), in the West Indies on 27 May 1793, renamed HYENE, and used as a privateer before being recaptured in 1797.
  • 1799 Capt. Hon. C. BALL, Spithead.
    Sailed for Gibraltar in June.
  • 1800 Capt. LLOYD, North Sea.
  • 1801 Capt. GRANGER. She came into Plymouth on 28 July 1801 from Cork after being at Copenhagen. She sailed again to join the fleet in Torbay on 14 December.
