ILDEFONSO (74) Taken at Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.
Broken up in 1816.

  • The SAN ILDEFONSO struck after exchanging broadsides with Capt. HOPE's DEFENCE for an hour when POLYPHEMUS approached. She had 165 casualties, DEFENCE only 36.
John QUILLIAM, who was first lieutenant of VICTORY, was put in charge of her after the battle; a position which secured his promotion to post rank without ever being a commander. He re-fitted her in Gibraltar and did not return to England until 16 May 1806. His post commission had been dated 24 December 1805.
  • She was used as a provision depot from 1813.
