KENT (74) Built in 1762, Deptford.
Sold in 1784.

  • 1774 Capt. Hon. Charles FIELDING, guard ship at Plymouth.
In July 1774 KENT was ordered on a six weeks' cruise and, at the moment of saluting the Admiral's flag while working up in the Sound, nearly 400 lb of gunpowder in a chest on the larboard side of the poop exploded.
Eleven men were killed and forty-five wounded. A marine drummer who was sitting on the chest in question was blown into the sea and suffered no hurt at all.
