VIXEN (14) Gun-brig Built in 1801, Buckler's Hard.
Sold in 1815.

  • 1803 Lieut. Philip Browne, 05/OO, Downs.
On 8 December 1803 about 25 miles S. E. of Lowestoft Lieut. BROWNE captured the French cutter privateer LYONNAIS, mounting two carriage guns and a complement of 21 men. She was commanded by Jean Joley and had been out for four days without making any captures.
When Lieut. BROWNE removed the enemy crew he found that the vessel was in such a bad state that, with the weather worsening, he decided it would be prudent to destroy her.
  • During his time in VIXEN he captured eight smuggling vessels, one merchant brig laden with sugar, one with marble and one with wine.
He also took two Dutch ships and recaptured a Newcastle collier.
Lieut. BROWNE was promoted into CHARWELL on 25 September 1806.
