STIRLING CASTLE (70) 3rd rate Built in 1742, Chatham DY.
Lost in 1762.

  • 1744 Capt. Thomas COOPER, Mediterranean. Leading Rear Adm. ROWLEY's van division in Adm. MATHEWS' fleet in the battle off Toulon on 11 February with the Franco-Spanish fleet under Adm. de COURT. Among the many courts martial that followed the battle Capt. COOPER appeared before one at Port Mahon on 12 May on charges brought by Vice Adm. LESTOCK, and was sentenced to be dismissed the service. Since the charge did not reflect on either his professional honour or ability, he was immediately restored him to his former rank and he was reappointed to STIRLING CASTLE.
