|
|
Does anyone know if MOST of the many Cruizer-class sloops (18-gun, brig rigged, with two masts) had aft cabins? - Or very few. I am trying to firm up the look of Saracen 18, built 1812. - Any thoughts welcome. |

According to David Lyon's Sailing Navy List, the Cruiser class was the most numerous class built at the period.
He shows a spar plan of the Wasp with clearly an aft cabin (p 141).
I suppose that as a class, all these sloops had the same arrangement.

Adding to the confusion, the Jotika model of HMS Cruizer does not have an aft cabin showing. On the other hand, the much later wreck of the HMS Pelorus does show one. Also, I came across a model having been made for one of the novelists of these ships (it wasn't Patrick O'Brian, but cannot remember the name now), where the ship modeller added an aft-cabin to the HMS CRUIZER kit. |

Not sure that models (except for historical ones) are a good source.
They have an incredible collection of original plans at Greenwich NM.

Another argument maybe is that sloops where commanded by commanders and it's difficult to imagine a commander berthing with subordinates.
