Can someone tell me about the H.M.S. Guerriere the British frigate taken by the U.S.S. Constitution during the War of 1812? I'm trying to find out about the ship as it was designed for the French Navy, particularly ship's classs and crew?
Thank you!

I found out that Guerriere had a crew of 350 when she faced Blanche in 1806, was this Guerriere's design complement?
Was the Guerriere a one-off or did she belong to a class of frigates that I can't locate through my limited sources?

The GUERRIERE was designed and built by J.F. Lafosse and built at Cherbourg; laid down 1798. She was the only 18pdr frigate built to a design by Lafosse.

William James has GUERRIERE with a complement of 317 at the time of her battle with the BLANCHE, her crew having been reduced by scurvy. The GUERRIERE had been part of a squadron of French frigates cruising in northern waters against British and Russian whalers and had been at sea for about 14 weeks. James states that her complement on leaving port had been 350. I presume that James is also the source of your information. _________________ Ionia |
