It's a foundational historical account of British naval and maritime events from the beginning of the Napoleonic wars in 1803 through the War of 1812 to the end of 1816, illustrated with sixty magnificent hand-colored aquatint engravings.

I agree that this three-volume series is a basic source for naval history of the period, but I have found that it is to be less useful (and less interesting) than Schomberg's Naval Chronology, which it purports to continue to the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
Ralfe seems to have been more of an outsider than Schomberg, who has all kinds of good stories about officers and events in the period he covers (up to 1802). There is a bit of a gap in the lists of post-captains between the end of Schomberg's lists in the Appendix of his books, and the beginning of those in Ralfe. Also Ralfe misses a few names, and annoyingly sometimes gives them in alphabetical order rather than date of posting. However Ralfe does have the fine illustrations mentioned above, although my reprint edition doesn't do them justice. All-in-all, if you are using it for research, Ralfe seems to be a little less complete and authoritative than its predecessor. |
