How to find a RN ship

If you are looking for a ship of the Royal Navy of the period, there are three places to start:

"Ships of the Royal Navy" by J. J. Colledge and Ben Barlow, new edition, Chatham Publishing, 2006, ISBN 978 1861762818.
This revised edition of the classic of Colledge contains more than 15,000 ships info including the hired vessels which are often difficult to find.

"The Sailing Navy List", the classic by David Lyon, 2nd edition, Conway Maritime Press, 1997, ISBN 978 0851778648.

Two things to keep in mind:

there was (normally) only one ship with a given name at a time. That's the reason why they changed often their name during their live, specially when they where put out of commission.

the principal provider of the RN of the period was... the French navy! Many captured ships (French, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, American) where bought from the captors and incorporated in the RN, often with the same name.
There was three "Neptune" at the battle of Trafalgar, French, Spanish and British.
Ships were sometimes taken, re-taken and taken again, changing their name each time.

Michael Phillips website Ships of the Old Navy at cronab.demon.uk/INTRO.HTM was very popular for many years but suddenly disappeared in March.
By chance I had a copy from 2002 somewhere so I have resurrected it at http://www.ageofnelson.org
It's still experimental: still a lot of work to do to correct the lay-out of the various notices.
I am adding a useful search engine.

There is now a new site which aims to list all sailing vessels of all nations.

This is very much a work in progress and will probably always be so but already has nearly 2000 seperate pages and lists.
