Michael Phillips website Ships of the Old Navy at cronab.demon.uk/INTRO.HTM was very popular for many years but suddenly disappeared in March.
By chance I had a copy from 2002 somewhere so I have resurrected it at http://www.ageofnelson.org
It's still experimental: still a lot of work to do to correct the lay-out of the various notices.
I am adding a useful search engine.

Patrick,
Your work in resurrecting this very useful list is much appreciated, and I am sure others will join me in thanking you for making it available here.
Thanks and best wishes,
Charles |

Patrick, this is brilliant - it just shows how vulnerable websites are (which is why it's great to have your naval officers as a CD-Rom). I have bookmarked the site - and already used it! Many, many thanks.

Hi;
Great website.
I have been away from ship modeling for a few months and when I tried to access http://www.cronab.demon.co.uk/ I was diasappointed that I could not find it. I was happy when I found your site here.
There is an archive site though called "way back mahine" and can be found at the following url. http://www.archive.org/index.php
Put the cronab address in the "take me back" box and you will find many copies of the old site saved over the years.
Hope this helps
Thanks - vaud |

Thanks for the tip.
I have now a recent copy of the Navy List (both) but there are plenty of other interesting stuf to take back from that site.

I happen to have made a copy from all the alphabetical ship's information on cronab.demon.uk to one word-document in 2003, for easier searching on dates and places. I am not sure that I have a complete copy (I hope and think I have). I am most willing to send this to PMarione for general use, but I do not know if it is legal to do so, as Michael Phillips claims copyright ©.
Today I was searching the document and I noticed that some larger Men of War (Magnificent,74; Prince,98 and Warrior,74) were in 'harbour service' in 1818. No names of Captain's are mentioned there, however. Were such ships in harbour service still under the command of a Post Captain?

Thanks.
The Michael Philllips db on this website is up to date as in 2007 with some corrections made since.
When a ship was in ordinary (mothballed) there were only "standing officers" on board: purser, boatswain, carpenter... who were in charge of keeping but no commissioned officers on board.
Ships in harbour service like guardships, prison ships, hospital ships were fully commissionned even if they didn't sail. Prison ships or hospital ships were often commanded by Lieutenants or Masters, not by Post-Captains.

For now all the people who have tried to reach him or his wife didn't get any answer.

Hello James et al,
Some years ago I exchanged emails a number of times with Mike's wife, Jane who originally came from the USA. Jane had written a number of articles on Emma and Nelson; I lost contact with her before the site went off-line.
This morning I spoke on the telephone with a lady who works in Plymouth Royal Dockyard, Devon. She went to Mike and Jane's wedding some years ago. She said that Mike and Jane still live in Saltash, Plymouth.
Mike had had a stroke, and as far as she knew they were both okay now, she could not tell me anything about the website. She had not spoken with them recently. She said that she will contact Jane and telephone me if there is any news.
I know that Mike was always very busy on his website. So I expect the doctor told him to slow down a bit. |

Hello,
I too was wondering where Michael Phillips was, so am glad that he is alive and getting well.
I am using the copy of the history that he has made and am adding to it with all the books I have in my library. Up to the last count I have 4300+ ships, based on a history from 1739 to 1815.
I have been able to add on a lot of extra history to each ship but I know it will take a very long time to give a large account of each ship. (It's like adding pieces to a very large jigsaw puzzle).
I could try to help if any one has a question on a particular ship, as long as I have it on my data base.
Best wishes,
Richard |
