For those interested in Naval Biographies there are two very other useful editions:
Biographica Navalis,
By John Charnock,
Six Volumes 1660-1798.
Not sure of price.
Reprint from Naval and Military Press, discussed before.
A Naval Biographical Dictionary,By W.R.O'Byrne. (1849)
Two Volumes.
Mine is a reprint by J.B. Hayward 1990, and I think I paid about £130 for it.
ISBN 0-903754-42-8
I think I saw O'Byrne on disk; a few years ago at the Royal Naval Museum shop, in Portsmouth Dockyard, it was only £10.
Both sets of books are very useful. |

There is a second edition (generally unknown) of O'Byrne in 1861. It's very interesting because it includes the masters, engineers, chaplains, surgeons, paymasters (ex-pursers), etc. to be found nowhere else.
Unfortunately it was published in monthly parts (I have never seen a complete set) and ended at "Giles" probably because it's main public was dying at a fast pace.
My reprint is by The London Stamp Exchange, no date, probably in the 1980's.
